FAQ's
What are your boards made from?
All boards are made from sustainable wood. Maple, Cherry, and Black Walnut
Exotic Charcuterie Boards use Purpleheart, Padauk, Zebra Wood and Okoume.
Serving Trays and Office Products may use Pine, Poplar and Birch (see product listing for more details)
Epoxy Resin board will always include wood and are strictly for serving purposes.
How to care for your products?
Your board comes already seasoned with a combination of mineral oil and our Board Butter and is ready to use upon purchase. Periodic cleaning will be needed and do both sides when you clean it.
Use a damp cloth or soft sponge with a solution made of water and a small amount of mild soap or use specific detergents for wood. Do not soak the board in water or put it in dishwasher. It is also safe to run water over your board to ensure all soap is removed as it will wash away bacteria as well. Keep the water running over it at an angle so it sheds off the wood quickly. After the board dries (12 hours) , where you have it standing on its side and not flat down, you can apply another coat of our Board Butter to recondition your boards or apply a high food grade mineral oil. Let the board dry for 8 to 12 hours and then buff it out using a paper towel or microfiber cloth before using.
Even if your board is used infrequently, the air will naturally dry out the wood over time. Make sure to recondition your products with our board butter or food grade mineral oil to prevent cracking and other damage.
In the winter, the dryer air may make wood products dry out more quickly. More frequent reconditioning may be needed.
Do not place hot pots, pans or roasting trays directly on board, let them cool and/or let the food contents rest and cool before placing on board.
How do I disinfect my board?
Use a cloth soaked with pure white vinegar to wipe down your board. Other types of vinegar may leave an odor on the board. Follow that by wiping your board with a wet towel. Vinegar has a low pH which will kill bacteria and germs on the surface of the board. This method is great especially if you are cutting raw meat.
Apply board butter or food grade mineral oil needed after giving the board a quick wash and drying.
How to avoid smells and bacteria?
Use kosher salt and halved lemons or use vinegar and baking soda to get rid of smells and bacteria on the board. Rub the combination on your board and then remove them with a wet cloth. Keep it sanitized and smelling clean!
Apply board butter or food grade mineral oil if needed if needed after giving the board a quick wash and drying.
Things to avoid with your wood products?
Do not put wooden products in the dishwasher, microwave, or oven.
Do not leave wooden products in standing water.
Do not let the wood completely dry out. This can occur from not conditioning the board for extended periods of time.
Do not use oils that can go rancid over time to recondition your wood products. Vegetable oil. Canola oil or Olive oil are all examples of an oil that can go rancid and will result in bacteria growth.
Do not store damp boards directly flat on countertops. Stand them on an edge to allow air flow all around the board for proper drying after cleaning.
Tips and tricks I use when maintaining my boards?
After cleaning and drying, rub the board with 1000 grit sandpaper to remove any raised grain or fuzzy feeling. The 1000 grit is very mild and is more like polishing the board than sanding it down. If you need, go down to 320 grit or 220 grit to level any light scratches or imperfections on the surface of the board.
Dedust the board after sanding. Give it a good amount of Board Butter or Food grade mineral oil.
Apply a liberal amount of Board Butter on both surfaces and sides of the board. Let it sit propped up so air can hit all sides for about 8 to 12 hours while the oil absorbs in and the wax dries on surface.
Buff your board with a microfiber cloth. This polishes it up, so it has both wax protection on top and oil within the board.
***** Food Grade Mineral Oil can be used in place of Board Butter
***** If your board has been engraved and you use my board butter or another product that has food grade wax in it, you may see some wax build up in the engraving. Use a clean, soft toothbrush with a couple of drops of mineral oil to buff out that wax.
